How To Let Go Of What Was Never Yours To Carry

Half of what is weighing you down was handed to you and you never agreed to hold it. Here is how to put it down.

How To Let Go Of What Was Never Yours To Carry

Letting go gets talked about like a feeling you have to summon, some serene state of release. Most of the time it is much more practical than that. It is noticing that you are carrying a thing, checking whether it is actually yours, and if it is not, putting it down. A lot of what is weighing you down was quietly loaded onto your back by other people, and you never once agreed to hold it.

Sort the load first

Before you can let go of anything, you have to see it. Take the thing that is weighing on you and ask one blunt question: is this mine to carry? Their bad mood. Their disappointment that you said no. The crisis they could have handled themselves. The expectation you never signed up for. A surprising amount of your weekly load fails the test. It is not yours. It was assigned to you, and you accepted delivery out of habit.

You are responsible to people, not for them

Here is the line that does most of the work. You can be responsible to the people you love without being responsible for them. Responsible to means you care, you show up, you are kind. Responsible for means you take ownership of their feelings and their outcomes, which is not love, it is over-functioning, and it quietly tells the other person you do not think they can handle their own life. Letting go is moving from “for” back to “to.”

Letting go is a decision you repeat

Do not wait to feel ready to release it. You will not. You decide to put it down, and then you decide again an hour later when your hands reach back for it out of habit, and again tomorrow. Letting go is not one grand act of release. It is the same small decision made repeatedly until the grip loosens on its own. The feeling of peace comes after the repeated decision, not before it.

What fills the space

People resist putting things down because the load has become an identity. If you are not carrying everyone, who are you? You are about to find out, and it is good news. The space that opens up when you stop holding what was never yours is where your own life has been waiting. Your energy, your time, your attention, finally available for the things that are actually yours to build.
